John Wayne, often working with the seminal director John Ford, was the premier American icon of the western frontier.

Born in May 1907 as 'Marion Mitchell Morrison,' John Wayne starred in American films, most often as cowboys or war heroes, and also directed and produced films. In the prime of his career, he represented rugged strength, individuality, masculinity, and even the old western maxim of manifest destiny. All of his mannerisms and affectations have become famous in popular culture, from his distinctive, manly voice, his posture and walking gait, and his towering height. Even his face is an American icon. He is known as much for his trademark scowl as his actual acting roles, and has coined a number of popular American catch phrases and lines. John Wayne is the quintessential American, and is a staple of American and Wild West culture.

He is known as one of the best actors of all time, constantly being voted by magazines and popular polls as either one America's favorite film actors or famous overall stars.

But even John Wayne was human. When he started out in the acting industry, he took on bit roles and small, non speaking parts for a mere seventy five dollars a week. It wasn't until he teamed up with John Ford and starred in classics like "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance," and "Stagecoach" that he hit it big, made his claim to fame, and transformed himself into the hero we all know and love. From 1939 to 1969, he was one of the most prolific, talented, and well known actors belonging to Hollywood. Even later in his life, as he fought numerous illnesses and court and personal battles with his many girlfriends, he managed to star in an almost inhuman number of films. John Wayne died in 1979 and left behind seven children. Many of whom went on to work in the film industry, following in the footsteps of their father, the legend.
